Buongiorno ‘a copp ‘o Tuocc ! Good Morning from a place in Praiano called “Tuocco”
Good Morning from the “Tuocco” !
Giuannina ‘a Marchesa and Maria Michela are two ladies of Praiano, both grandmothers. During their summer afternoons they meet for a chit chat. The location where they live is indicated with a nickname of historical meaning: “Tuocco” , located up in Praiano, let’s call it the Vettica hinterland.
Tuocco is a e neapolitan word and it stays for the Italian word of “tocco”,better to say “fare il tocco”.
What does it mean fare il tocco?
For example to determine who is the first turn in a game with contenders.
Having said that, before 1700 in Praiano and Vettica there were 2 majors. They were elected by the show of hands old method, in which the members raise their hand to show their vote.
The Major of Praiano, used to be elected in Piazza San Luca. Probably, the major of Vettica was elected in this little square up in Praiano, that now is recognized with the name “Tuocco” for the locals.
When we say “Ngopp ‘o Tuocc” litterally translated “up on the Tuocco” , we know we are talking about that location.
Hope you enjoyed this historical and authentic nugget of information about this lovely town.
